It is a true honor to hold the office of the Treasurer of the American Association for Justice for another term. Thank you for putting your trust in me once again.
Some days, it feels like the world is on fire. There is so much injustice raging through the world. The nightly news brings stories of shootings at schools, politicians putting party before country, environmental disasters ravaging communities, racial stress dividing our country, and so many other troubling events. We are living in challenging times.
But trial lawyers are up for these challenges.
Over the last two years, I have had the privilege to bring many new and talented people to our law firm. I enjoy working with my team every day. But, I have found it important to instill and foster a fighting spirit. Trial lawyers do not have many easy days. One of the keys to successfully representing individuals against powerful corporations and governments is to keep fighting. We have a saying in Washington, DC, that every day, you have to “Stay in the Fight.” I think that mantra applies well to trial lawyers.
“I consider trial by jury as the only anchor ever yet imagined by man, by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution.” – Thomas Jefferson
It has been a true pleasure to serve under Sean Domnick, our outgoing President. Sean has kept a calm and steady hand on the wheel this year. I have watched him listen to many different viewpoints on various issues, consider all the input, and then take the lead. I would be remiss if I did not congratulate Sean for a great year and thank him for all he has taught me about leading AAJ.
I have continued to work with our world-class staff. The commitment and dedication they show to our mission is inspiring. No one embodies this more than Linda Lipsen. She is the heart of the trial lawyer's mission.
Of course, no leader has influenced me more than my father, Barry Nace. I was fortunate to spend 15 years working with him and trying cases with him. I learned so much in those years, perhaps nothing as important as being tough and fighting for our clients. And that we can never give up and never give in.
Without trial lawyers, the civil justice system is an empty threat. Trial lawyers put the teeth into the system. As trial lawyers, we speak for those who have been silenced. We do so with passion, with integrity, and with vigor. Our burden is to be stronger for others than sometimes we are for ourselves. And it is a burden that is an honor to carry.
As your Treasurer, I intend to fight for you, our members, with the same passion, vigor, and integrity with which I fight for our clients. And I will do the same for our clients and the civil justice system.
The world needs a strong civil justice system and an army of trial lawyers educated, motivated, and equipped to hold wrongdoers accountable.
Whether it is through our extraordinary education, the Exchange, our sections and litigation groups and caucuses, our meetings and conventions, or our second-to-none advocacy team, each and every trial lawyer in America benefits from our association.
As your treasurer, I hope to continue serving as an advocate for AAJ, our members, and the civil justice system. I believe that AAJ will continue to be THE Association for Trial Lawyers because I believe in our mission, I believe in our leaders, I believe in our team, and I believe in our members. And I promise to always Stay in the Fight!
